Building on existing maglev technology—places like China and Japan have used it on high-speed trains for more than a decade—Virgin Hyperloop One has emerged as one of the leading firms vying to create the revolutionary transit system. Virgin is still in the testing phrase, but its autonomous passenger pods (which will travel nearly 700 mph) are being tested at a remote site in the Nevada desert.
